Solipsism

Definition:
Solipsism is the philosophical view that only one’s own mind can be known to exist with certainty. External reality and other minds may be uncertain or dependent upon one’s consciousness.

Thinkers:

  • René Descartes (often discussed in relation to solipsistic problems though he did not defend it)
  • George Berkeley

Example:
A person wondering whether other individuals are merely products of his own mind approaches solipsism.
